Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at shenson@lostcoastfamily.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

When is it happening?

Our adult groups run for 14-week sessions from March to June, and September to December. Our typical schedule is Mondays from 5pm to 7:30pm. This specific time shifts slightly depending on group members' availability, although will always happen on Monday.

Is this a drop-in gaming group?

NO - this is a therapy group, first and foremost. We ask that if you choose to participate in this group, you commit to attending all 14 weekly sessions with no more than 2 absences. Each week builds upon the last, and as D&D is collaborative storytelling, to miss sessions disrupts this process.

How is this therapy?

D&D (and TTRPGs in general) is a game that is designed to put its participants into specific situations and test their abilities as well as their values. Through an integration of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and plenty of psychoeducation, our group helps you create a character that is a reflection of yourself and your values, and put that character to the test. The Therapeutic Dungeon Master will provide a structured discussion followed by encounters meant to mirror moments in which your values may be tested, and will model coping strategies and reflection of your values to help you practice commitment to your values in real life. All while fighting monsters!

How can I pay for this?

We accept cash, checks, and online credit card payments. Each session is $50, to be paid at the time of service. If you would like to use insurance to pay for this service, we accept Medi-Cal/Partnership/Carelon, and we can provide superbills for reimbursement from other insurances. We cannot guarantee a rate of reimbursement from your insurance, please contact an insurance representative for a specific figure.

Is this group for me?

This group will require self-reflection, flexibility, vulnerability, and commitment.

  • Each participant is only allowed to miss 2 sessions, or they will be removed from the group. So reliable transportation and an ability to commit to attending a weekly event for 14 weeks are required!
  • Participants will be expected to role-play and be silly! Which may be difficult or overwhelming for someone who experiences significant social anxiety.
  • Gameplay will not perfectly mirror traditional D&D gameplay, so those very familiar with the rules of the game may experience frustration or confusion.
  • Each session will include moments of sharing more vulnerable pieces of oneself with the group, which can be difficult for anyone!

If the above bullet points feel doable, please continue and fill out our form so we can contact you as soon as possible for an intake interview!

When is it happening?

We have two teen groups that occur concurrently throughout the year. One group happens Wednesdays, the other Thursdays, both from 5pm to 6:30pm.

Can I attend either group anytime?

Nope! While the groups are occurring simultaneously, they will very quickly become entirely different stories. Anyone with experience with D&D knows that two groups running the exact same campaign can almost instantly become entirely different. So we ask that if you choose to attend Wednesdays group, you stick with Wednesdays, and vice versa.

Is this a drop-in gaming group?

Nope, BUT it is more flexible than some other therapy groups. While attendance is highly encouraged to maintain consistency with working towards goals, with our weekly schedule and long-running ongoing campaigns, we do not require our participants to attend EVERY week.

How is this therapy?

Our teen group is primarily a behavioral group. Each participant and their parent meets with the Therapeutic Dungeon Master and clarifies their goals prior to joining the group. Goals are diverse and different for each participant, ranging from make new friends, to increasing your ability to engage in coping strategies during moments of distress. The Dungeon Master then rewards the participants with extra XP, magical items, advantages, etc. when the participant moves towards their goals in-game, reinforcing that behavior. This is not an overnight fix, but a long-term strategy to increase positive, pro-social behavior.
